Ring, ring! In this week's blog post, we get into high gear to look at one of our most underrated forms of transport: the bicycle. The two-wheeled "dandy horse" turned 200 years old earlier this year - read on to find out what other fun facts we've uncovered!

1. The term "bicycle" was coined in France in the 1860s.

2. In 1935, young Fred A. Birchmore cycled all around the world at age 25. He travelled 25,000 miles by bike and went through 7 pairs of tyres.

3. The smallest bicycle ever made has wheels the same size as two US dollar coins.

4. The Tour de France is the most famous cycling race in the world. It was first held in 1903.

5. There are over 1 billion bicycles in the world, half of which are in China.

6. Bicycles are one of our most versatile vehicles. They are used for transport, recreation, racing, stunts, and courier delivery.

7. The fastest speed of a bicycle on a flat surface recorded is 133.75 km/h (about 83 m/h).

8. This year, the bicycle turned 200 years old. Our modern-day bicycle is based on a vehicle called the draisine or dandy horse, which was invented in 1817 by the German baron Karl von Drais.
